12 Best Eyeliners for Older Women to Deliver an Instant Eye Lift

Though makeup rules are seldom universal, mature women are often encouraged to rotate certain products out of their makeup collections—for good. (Sparkly shadows, prone to emphasizing texture, comes to mind.) The best eyeliners for older women, however, are in no such danger of forced retirement.

Vogue’s Favorite Eyeliners for Older Women:

Best for a No-Makeup Makeup Look

Laura Mercier Caviar Tightline Eyeliner

Jump to review

Best for Watery Eyes

Laura Geller Kajal Longwear Kohl Eyeliner

Jump to review

“Eyeliner actually becomes more important as we age,” says pro makeup artist Stevi Christine. “Lashes tend to thin over time, and a liner at the roots helps bring back that youthful fullness.”

That said, not all types of eyeliners—or application techniques—will flatter the mature gaze. Christine’s first rule of thumb (or, ahem, eye) for mature clients? “Swap harsh black liquid liners for softer pencils or gel eyeliner, and focus on blending the product right into the lash line, rather than drawing a hard edge,” she advises. “Smudged, kohl formulas define the eyes without overpowering them.”

So, which formulas deserve a spot on your lash lines? And, what’s the one liquid black eyeliner that gives women over 50 the perfect cat-eye? (Indeed, there are always exceptions to a makeup rule!) Keep reading. Ahead, we’ve rounded up the eyeliners makeup artists keep on hand for mature clients, though these formulas also work for sensitive, watery, or hooded eyes of any age. However you draw the line, these expert-approved products are like an instant eye lift.

In This Story:

Best Overall: Victoria Beckham Satin Kajal Liner

  • Why We Love It: “Victoria Beckham’s Satin Kajal Liner is one of my favorite liners, especially on mature lids,” Christine says. She notes that the pencil’s creamy texture lends itself to an effortless glide, which makes the product particularly user-friendly. “The built-in smudger also lets you diffuse the line into a soft shadow, which helps soften the eyeliner look,” she notes. The formula is available in 20 shades, which range from sea green to gold and basic black. “For women over 50, I gravitate toward shades like Cocoa, Bordeaux, Olive, or Ash, which define the eyes without the starkness of jet black,” Christine says. The formula gets a second endorsement from pro makeup artist Dani Wagener. “This pencil has quickly become my all-time favorite because it effortlessly creates the most stunning, smudged effect along the top lash line,” she says. “The rich range of colors available is truly exceptional.” Makeup artist Marcia Williams adds to the chorus of praise. “The Victoria Beckham Satin Kajal Liner is super versatile,” she says. “It glides on smoothly, which allows it to be used as a liner or as an eyeshadow.” Williams’ hue of choice? The Sea Grey, which, she says, mature eyes a “pretty, silvery shimmer.”
  • Key Ingredients: Chamomile extract, panthenol, vitamin E, mineral-based silica pearl
  • Shades: 20
  • Type: Creamy kajal pencil
  • Waterproof: Yes

Best for Versatile Wear: Sarah Creal Eyes Up Creamy Kajal Longwear Liner

Sarah Creal

Eyes Up Creamy Kajal Longwear Liner

  • Why We Love It: Sarah Creal, a product formulator who’s worked behind the scenes at Victoria Beckham Beauty, Tom Ford, and more, launched her luxe cosmetics line with women over 40 in mind. Eyes Up, made with an exclusive cream-gel matrix technology, is a kajal liner that stays put for up to 24 hours. The long-lasting formula is ophthalmologist-tested and deemed safe for sensitive eyes; it also has allantoin to soothe and hydrate the skin around the eyes. Available in jet black and earthy, neutral hues ranging from bronze to taupe and gold, the liner can be worn in several ways. For an everyday look, the brand recommends applying black or brown liner inside the top waterline and above the lashes, followed by a swipe of mascara. For something slightly more intense, try using the black liner on the inside the top waterline and above the lashes, then use the gold liner on the inner corner of the eye.
  • Key Ingredients: Cream-gel matrix technology, allantoin
  • Shades: 6
  • Type: Kajal pencil
  • Waterproof: Yes

Best for a No-Makeup Makeup Look: Laura Mercier Caviar Tightline Eyeliner

Laura Mercier

Caviar Tightline Eyeliner

  • Why We Love It: “Laura Mercier Caviar Tightline has been a staple in my makeup bag for years,” says Christine. “It’s perfect for creating that effortless ‘no-makeup-makeup’ look.” As an application hack, Christine presses the gel-like formula right into the roots of her clients’ lashes. “It makes the eyes pop and the lashes look naturally full,” she says. She also uses the formula to line mature clients’s upper waterline, which, she says: “Gives fullness and lift instantly, without creating a visible line.” According to Tayaba Jafri, makeup artist and global beauty director of Laura Mercier, the formula works particularly well on mature eyes because it has an “ultra-creamy texture that respects thinning skin.” It glides on without skipping, tugging, or migrating into fine lines, she says, while its smudge-and-transfer-proof formula allows for subtle tightlining. A thin line in a dark brown hue is central to any natural look, after all.
  • Key Ingredients: Hyaluronic acid
  • Shades: 7
  • Type: Gel-like pencil
  • Waterproof: Yes

Best for Watery Eyes: Laura Geller Kajal Longwear Kohl Eyeliner

Laura Geller

Kajal Longwear Kohl Eyeliner

  • Why We Love It: Legendary makeup artist and brand founder Laura Geller, now in her 60s, takes the concerns of mature women into account when formulating her products. This soft kohl pencil eyeliner—which has a built-in sharpener—is no exception. “Our Kajal Longwear Eyeliner is filled with vitamin E, so it glides right on and doesn’t pull the skin around the eye,” Geller tells Vogue. Richly pigmented and long-wearing, “this won’t smudge or crease, which is especially great for older women whose eyes might water or be more sensitive,” Geller says. The formula also has a jolt of caffeine, which can help reduce puffiness and redness around the eyes.
  • Key Ingredients: Vitamin E, caffeine
  • Shades: 16
  • Type: Soft kohl pencil
  • Waterproof: No

Best for a Smoky Eye: Charlotte Tilbury Rock N Kohl Eyeliner

  • Why We Love It: “As we get older, the skin around our eyes can start to lose elasticity, which can make applying eyeliner a little trickier,” says makeup artist and brand founder Charlotte Tilbury. “This is why I recommend using my Rock ‘N’ Kohl, which has a smooth, creamy texture and intense color payoff, meaning it glides effortlessly onto the eye area without skipping or dragging.” Tilbury explains that the kajal formula is waterproof, long-lasting, and easy to use. “It even comes with its own smudger brush tip, which can be used to blend out the liner for a soft, smoky effect,” she says. To create the sultry look, “Simply glide the pencil along the lash line, then gently run the smudger brush tip back and forth over the liner,” Tilbury instructs. She adds that a diffused, smoky liner look flatters mature eyes, as it doesn’t emphasize fine lines or wrinkles as much as a sharper line tends to do. “I love using a shade like Smokey Bronze on my more mature clients as it creates a softer, more natural definition and doesn’t overwhelm the eyes,” she says.
  • Key Ingredients: Argan oil, panthenol, matricaria flower extract
  • Shades: 6
  • Type: Creamy kohl pencil
  • Waterproof: Yes

Best for Sensitive Eyes: Clinique Quickliner For Eyes Eyeliner Pencil

Clinique

Quickliner For Eyes Eyeliner Pencil

  • Why We Love It: “This is a fantastic everyday liner for mature skin,” says makeup artist Alexa Perisco. “It’s smooth, gentle, and retractable, so there’s no pulling or sharpening.” She adds that the formula is creamy enough to blend, but long-lasting, so it stays put. “I often recommend smoky brown or black-brown for a softer, more flattering finish on mature eyes,” she notes. Adhering to Clinique’s Eye Safety Promise, which applies to its mascaras, liners, and lid color, the formula is also ophthalmologist-tested and safe for sensitive eyes and contact-lens wearers.
  • Key Ingredients: Vitamin E
  • Shades: 11
  • Type: Creamy automatic pencil
  • Waterproof: No

Best Application: Westman Atelier Eye Love You Eye Pencil

  • Why We Love It: “I adore this liner because it’s ultra nourishing and packed with clean conditioning ingredients that respect the delicate skin around the eyes,” Perisco says. “It delivers a rich, velvety pigment that melts into the lash line, and creates a natural definition that enhances, rather than ages, the eyes.” Made with organic jojoba oil and shea butter, the kohl pencil is also safe for use on the waterline. “This is easy to use with instant beauty impact,” says Williams. “It glides and defines, which is great for that everyday woman who is on the go and wants a simplified look. It’s also ideal for the woman who is conscious of harsh chemicals.”
  • Key Ingredients: Organic jojoba oil, shea butter
  • Shades: 2
  • Type: Kohl pencil
  • Waterproof: No

Best for Crepey Eyes: Soshe Beauty Waterproof Precision Eyeliner

Soshe

Waterproof Precision Eyeliner

  • Why We Love It: Just getting the hang of tightlining? “This pencil is perfect for beginners learning to tightline under the waterline; says Wagener. “The tiny tip fits seamlessly into the lash line. Additionally, it’s a waterproof formula and stays in place without smudging.” Makeup artist Jenny Patinkin is also a fan. “Soshe liners have an extra fine tip, which means that your eyeliner won’t take up a ton of eyelid space, especially if you’re getting more hooded or crepey over time,” she says. “The caveat is that as skin becomes looser and more delicate over the years, you may need to put a small amount of tension on the lid skin to get a precise application.” Patinkin also likes that the four-shade range, which includes deep plum and midnight blue, focuses on cooler hues. “A blue undertone makes the whites of the eyes look nice and bright, versus warm undertones that can accentuate redness or discoloration,” she notes.
  • Key Ingredients: Film-forming agents (trimethylsiloxysilicate), candelilla and synthetic wax, iron oxides
  • Shades: 4
  • Type: Gel pencil
  • Waterproof: Yes

Best for Lasting Wear: Lancôme Le Stylo Waterproof Long Lasting Eyeliner

Lancôme

Le Stylo Waterproof Long Lasting Eyeliner

  • Why We Love It: As seen on 57-year-old Julia Roberts at the After the Hunt premiere at the New York Film Festival, Lancôme’s long-lasting pencil “has a creamy texture that glides on effortlessly,” says makeup artist Genevieve Herr, who did Roberts’s makeup for the event. “Once blended and shaped, this sets beautifully—and it’s completely waterproof.” The eyeliner comes in eight shades, ranging from white to midnight blue. As a rule, Herr sticks to neutral hues like slate grey for daytime, while at night, she leans toward darker hues. On Roberts, Herr used the pencil in Noir Intense, and completed the look with taupe shadows and a lifting, volumizing mascara.
  • Key Ingredients: Synthetic wax, iron oxides, mica, hydrogenated polyisobutene
  • Shades: 8
  • Type: Creamy pencil
  • Waterproof: Yes

Best Vogue-Approved: Jones Road The Best Pencil

  • Why We Love It: When Vogue’s senior beauty shopping writer Kiana Murden tested the entire Jones Road collection, a few products floated to the top of her list. “Some products I liked, others I wholeheartedly loved,” Murden wrote. This eyeliner, infused with vitamin E, made it to onto the “love” list, and brand founder Bobbi Brown, 68, happens to love it too. “It’s the best eyeliner I’ve ever used, as it goes on easily,” Brown told Murden. The makeup mogul applies the brown liner for an easy, day-to-day look, and she also uses it to fill in her brows—and even a stray grey root—in a pinch.
  • Key Ingredients: Vitamin E
  • Shades: 6
  • Type: Highly pigmented pencil
  • Waterproof: No

Best for a Tug-Free Application: Jillian Dempsey Khôl Eyeliner

  • Why We Love It: Infused with organic jojoba and marula oils and shea butter for an ultra-smooth application, Jillian Dempsey’s blendable kohl formula is another go-to for Patinkin. According to makeup artist and brand founder Jillian Dempsey, the formula combines a soft texture with intense pigment, which makes it a win for mature eyes. Plus, “It lays down beautifully and it stays put,” she says. As for application, Dempsey generally recommends drawing a straight line onto the lower lid and then quickly using a finger or a small nylon brush to blend. In this case, the eyeliner comes with a built-in smudger, which can also be used to diffuse the look. “Use a cotton bud with a touch of makeup remover to make adjustments if the amount looks too heavy,” Dempsey suggests. “I also like to use an eyeliner between the upper lashes, which is known as a tightline.” The pencil’s six-shade range includes black, brown, white, and burgundy. “If you have a fair or pale skin tone, be sure to use lighter pigments such as soft browns,” Dempsey instructs. “If you have medium or deep skin tones, deeper pigmented eyeliners work well, just as long as they are not hard formulas.”
  • Key Ingredients: Organic jojoba oil, organic shea butter, marula oil
  • Shades: 6
  • Type: Kohl pencil
  • Waterproof: Yes

Best Liquid: Lisa Eldridge Kitten Flick Liquid Eyeliner

Lisa Eldridge

Kitten Flick Liquid Eyeliner

  • Why We Love It: As makeup artists have said many times before (including in this very piece), liquid liners are not always suited for mature lids. Enter the rare exception: Lisa Eldridge’s Kitten Flick. “This is one of the best precision liners for older women who still love a defined wing,” Perisco says. “The brush tip gives you full control, and the deep satin black shade lifts and elongates the eyes beautifully.” For mature lids, she recommends applying the liner in small strokes, moving slightly upward at the outer corners. “This will give the appearance of an instant eye lift,” she says. Eldridge designed the product for ease of use, and previously told Vogue: “The liquid liner has a really tiny, very flexible felt tip, and it was important to me that the ink came out perpetually, not in stages, for a smooth and even line.” Eldridge has used the formula on celebrity clients of all ages, including 30-year-old Dua Lipa and 55-year-old Claudia Schiffer.
  • Key Ingredients: Castor oil
  • Shades: 1
  • Type: Ultra-fine liquid pen
  • Waterproof: No

Everything You Need to Know

What type of eyeliner is best for mature eyes?

“Because of its rich color payoff, a smooth gel or cream eyeliner pencil is a great choice for enhancing mature eyes,” says Wagener. “Eyeliner with a creamy texture glides on effortlessly, providing a defined line that won’t tug at delicate skin.” On the other hand, Wagener tells her mature clients to steer clear of most liquid felt-tip liners. “They can be less forgiving and very difficult to use,” she says.

What to Look for in an Eyeliner for Older Women

When it comes to choosing an eyeliner for women over 50, makeup artists keep a few key factors in mind.

  • Water-Resistance: “Since so many women get either dry eyes or watery eyes as we age, my preference is always to use a water-resistant liner or a long-wearing application technique by layering shadow over the liner,” Patinkin says.
  • Ease of Removal: While Patinkin recommends long-wearing or water-resistant formulas, “I stay away from most waterproof eyeliner products on mature skin since it’s easy to rub too hard when you’re removing them at the end of the day,” Patinkin says. “The last thing mature skin needs is all that tension and pressure on the delicate eyelid skin.”
  • Texture: For mature lids in particular, makeup artists gravitate toward eyeliners with a smooth, creamy texture, such as those made with kajal or kohl. “Avoid overly dry pencils as they can skip or pull on delicate skin,” Perisco notes.
  • Ingredients: Additionally, consider what’s inside the formula. Beyond the ingredients, keep in mind if the liner is hypoallergenic, cruelty-free, or paraben-free as these factors can ensure its safe for sensitive eyes.
  • Tip Size: Eyes can become more hooded with age. According to Patinkin, a liner with an ultra-fine tip is ideal for this scenario, as it can help accentuate the eyes without taking up too much lid space.
  • Color: There’s always room to play around with color, and artists gravitate toward different shades for their mature clients. For Perisco, it’s hard to beat shades like deep brown, bronze, or plum enhance for mature eyes. “These enhance eye color while keeping the overall look soft and elegant,” she says. Patinkin’s take? “I love a navy, grey, or plum liner for tightlining,” she says, reiterating her preference for cooler tones on older eyes. “A blue undertone makes the whites of the eyes pop, and look nice and bright,” she says.

How should you apply eyeliner to mature eyes?

“Depending on the eye shape, I often line only the outer third or outer half of the upper lash line and then tightline the whole length of the lash line from underneath,” says Patinkin. “This is a great technique for lots of reasons.” First, she says, it contributes to a lifted look at the outer corner of the eyes, where the shadow is thicker. The technique also helps define the shape of the eyes without “eating up lid space,” she says.
Tightlining is another technique makeup artists favor for mature eyes. “It makes the lashes look thicker because you’re filling in gaps between the roots of the lashes,” Patinkin says.
