In fact, it doubles as an agent for barrier repair. “There are lab and clinical studies showing that snail secretion can promote wound healing, calm inflammation, and improve skin texture by hydrating and supporting collagen production,” Dr. Chang adds. The clinical data is relatively small, she continues, but the results are in line with what many attest to anecdotally, like smoother, better moisturized, and less irritated skin. “So while it’s not a replacement for well-studied actives like retinoids, it’s a useful ingredient for boosting hydration and improving overall skin health in a gentle way,” she says.
