On Tuesday evening, guests dutifully filed into The Metrograph—the Lower East Side’s beloved indie two-screen theater—picking up popcorn, root beer, and craft candies from the artisanal concession stands. All were abuzz (and dressed to impress, of course) as they eagerly found their seats, ready to settle in for a first look at the yet-to-be-released documentary film, Marc by Sofia.
The evening was curated by The Met’s Friends of the Costume Institute. “I’m so excited to support two of my dear friends—Marc and Sofia—and also to provide this exciting opportunity for the Friends of the Costume Institute to get an exclusive preview of Marc by Sofia,” Colby Mugrabi, a co-chair of the group, told Vogue. “It recently premiered at the Venice Film Festival in early September, but it’s not out yet, so we’re getting a very exclusive preview.”
After a brief introduction by Coppola, the opening credits were rolling. An unconventional look at Marc Jacobs’s life, the project weaves through time—beginning with the run-up to the designer’s seminal spring 2024 show, which marked his 40th anniversary in business. Audiences then track the friendship between the designer and the filmmaker, as Coppola takes them further into Jacobs’s universe.
But the evening was more than just a night at the movies. It was a celebration of culture and collectors, with guests ready to explore and discuss the connection between art and fashion. “Our missions are very aligned. One of our goals with the Friends Costume Institute is to progress the conversation around fashion being an art form. So Sofia, one of the most respected visionaries in the film world, choosing Marc as not only a dear friend of 35 years but also a subject of one of her films really furthers that narrative,” Mulgrabi added.
