While the Recording Academy’s official line on the additions was that they would help the group to recognize “a broader spectrum of artistic craft” and honor “the evolving ways music is created and experienced,” critics of the new country category in particular questioned its timing—arriving as it does just a year after Beyoncé became the first-ever Black woman to win best country album (for Cowboy Carter). Others, however, have argued that the category will give a genre that has often been overlooked an important new platform.
