America’s ‘scariest’ motel is home to a collection of 7,000 CLOWNS – would YOU stay there?

If you suffer from a fear of clowns, better known as coulrophobia, you might want to rethink spending the night at America’s ‘scariest’ motel – where guests sleep in themed rooms surrounded by thousands of clowns.

The Clown Motel in Tonopah, Nevada, considers itself the creepiest in the world thanks to its extensive collection of 7,000 clowns, spooky horror rooms and a neighbouring cemetery.

Located next to the historic Tonopah Cemetery, the motel has gained its haunted reputation from reported paranormal activity at the site, which houses graves of those who died violently or from the Plague during the town’s early mining boom.

The motel was originally built in 1985 by Leona and Leroy David to honour their father, a clown lover who left behind a collection of 150 toys, ornaments, figures and artwork.

From just $79 (£58) a night, the accommodation now offers guests the chance to experience ‘the excitement of the unknown’ in what many perceive a generally unsettling atmosphere.

At first glance, the motel appears to offer traditional, modest lodging, with each of its 31 rooms featuring a bed, sofa and desk, along with amenities such as a television, refrigerator, microwave and coffee pot.

The layout might look normal enough, but each room has been uniquely designed to unnerve even the most fearless of guests.

While some are decorated with flamboyant bright colours, mismatched furniture and clown memorabilia, others consist of themed suites inspired by horror films like The Exorcist, Friday the 13th, Chucky and Stephen King’s ‘IT.’

Room 108, which sleeps up to four adults and features a Pennywise-themed mural, is considered one of the motel’s most haunted rooms, with guests reportedly hearing disembodied voices and feeling an unknown ‘presence’.

In Room 107, aptly named ‘Fear Unlimited,’ visitors have reported feeling a hard hit while sleeping or hearing unexplained sounds in an otherwise empty room.

According to the motel’s website, the room – which features various distorted images of clowns – was closed over the last four years following a ‘couple of deaths’ in the last decade.

Management added: ‘Guests next door room #108 started reporting so frequently many weird and mysterious things. They reported next door guests moving furniture all night long, banging walls and all. Finally, May 4th it was open to the guests.’

Due to frequent reports of paranormal activity at the property, guests can even rent an EMF (Electromagnetic Field) reader to detect electromagnetic waves, with some believing these waves can be linked to spirits.

Beyond the rooms, The Clown Motel also features a free-to-visit Clown Museum with thousands of clown figurines and memorabilia, along with a gift shop selling souvenirs, and photo opportunities with life-sized cut-out clowns at the property.

The motel even accepts clown donations from both guests and non-guests, as they strive to host the world’s largest clown collection.

On their website, they wrote: ‘We accept all kinds of clowns, including artwork and other clown paraphernalia and always promise to look after them, you can visit your clowns anytime you like.’

One avid traveller, who goes by @jeff.c.rhoades on Instagram, said: 'This place was definitely one of the creepiest and most unique motels I’ve ever stayed at.

One avid traveller, who goes by @jeff.c.rhoades on Instagram, described the motel as ‘one of the weirdest (and creepiest) places that I’ve stumbled upon in all of my road trips,’ in a video documenting his stay.

Another visitor, who goes by @counting.countries, posted: ‘It is every bit as creepy as it looks.’

User @afpistudio warned, ‘If you think this motel looks creepy, you’re right. Honestly, I have never seen anything like it,’ yet urged, ‘Whether you’re a thrill-seeker or just passing through, this place offers a unique and spine-chilling experience.’
