Former Paris resident reveals the hidden spots to take the best pictures of the Eiffel Tower

A photograph in front of the Eiffel Tower is par for the course when you’re visiting Paris.

You’d be hard pressed to find a tourist in the French capital who hasn’t spent some time posing in front of the iconic construction, hoping to get the perfect angle – without the tower seemingly popping out of their head.

Similarly, no one wants their pictures plagued by hoards of fellow tourists – or, worse, street vendors selling plastic miniatures of the tower.

Naturally, those visiting the city head to tourist hotspots in order to get clear, classic photos of the Eiffel Tower.

From Trocadero, for example, the open space that overlooks the structure, you can get a good shot. Or, likewise, the Champ de Mars – the park next to it – is an easy place to get photos.

But these places will be full of others with exactly the same idea.

When I lived in Paris, I was determined not to bore my friends and family in the UK with the same old snaps you see in every tourist’s camera roll. No – I was going to get creative and explore.

So if you’re looking for a more unique place to get an unobstructed view – or, given it’s coming up to the autumnal, festive months, perhaps an even more beautiful view framed by trees – look no further.

The first place you should go to in order to get a perfect shot is Rue de l’Université.

A quiet residential street near the tower itself, during the autumn months it’s usually quiet – with the occasional local student popping by for a snap for their Instagram, perhaps.

Plus, it has the perfect combination of typical Parisian buildings and orange leaf-filled trees in the frame.

Bonus tip – it’s right by the Musée du quai Branly Jacques Chirac if you fancy a spot of culture after your photoshoot.

The next port of call is Avenue de Camoëns, located in the posh 16th arrondissement of the city. Posing on the steps will get you the perfect snap.

Meanwhile, Parisian bridges are an underrated place to get photographs.

Pont de l’Alma, just a 12-minute walk from the Eiffel Tower, will get you a view with the River Seine. Bonus points for taking this photo at night, as the sparkling lights glisten in the water, reflecting back.

And, my favourite secret photo spot of all – and it’s hidden on one of Paris’s metro lines.

If you take metro Line 6 to the Bir-Hakeim station, you’ll get a view of the Eiffel Tower from the platform.

Or, even better, take the same line between Passy and Bir-Hakeim stations for views of the Tower from the bridge as the train crosses the Seine.

I’d recommend you go at a time where the metro is unlikely to be busy – in other words, avoid the early morning commuter rush hour or the same in the evening. So, something like 11am or 2pm would be a perfect time to go.

I promise, you won’t be disappointed.
