Plane passenger adopts ‘ridiculous’ position to stop seats in front reclining on eight-hour flight

It can often be a pain when you’re sat behind someone on a plane who’s insistent on reclining their seat back.

But one passenger took things into his own hands during an overnight flight and adopted a ‘ridiculous’ position to stop this from happening.

Gary James, 31, flew from Mexico to Manchester last month, when he noticed the measures a fellow traveller was taking.

The Yorkshireman, from Halifax, claimed that a man placed his hands on the seats in front of him as soon as the flight took off and kept them in place throughout the duration of the eight-hour-long flight.

Gary recorded a video of the scenes, which shows the passenger appearing to angle his hands to cover the entire row while he watched a film.

According to the software engineer, the man only removed his hands from the seats to eat and would ‘slam’ them back into place whenever the three passengers in front attempted to recline.

He believes the occupants must have thought their seats were broken and considered telling them about what was happening, but didn’t as they were asleep for the majority of the flight.

Gary explained: ‘As soon as the flight set off, the people in the front row tried to recline their seats and the guy slammed his hands on the back of the chair to stop them from reclining.

‘I don’t think they noticed, I think that they thought the chair was just broken.

‘He just kept them there for the rest of the flight and every time that they tried reclining, he would slam them back into place.

‘I wanted to tell the people on the front row but they were asleep for most of the flight so I didn’t get chance.

‘It must have been seven or eight hours that he kept his hands there.’

Gary revealed that the passenger didn’t rest on the flight, and only paused from his seat holding to have something to eat.

‘He didn’t sleep, the only time he took it off was when he was eating,’ he recalled.

The holidaymaker was surprised by the other passenger’s actions and felt people should be able to recline if they wish to.

Gary said: ‘It’s shocking to me that people don’t like reclining – especially on an overnight flight – it’s a long flight from Mexico.

‘The chairs aren’t comfortable. You’ve paid for your seat so if the seat comes with a reclining feature then you should be able to recline in it in my opinion.’

He posted the footage on TikTok and amassed over 5 million views, with plenty of people taking to the comments to share their verdict on the situation.

Many seemed to agree with the passenger and one explained why they found reclining seats ‘disrespectful’.

‘He’s an icon. Reclining is so disrespectful and if you have longer legs the person who does it will literally jam into your joints and put you in horrible pain,’ they penned. ‘I will never understand how people do it, disgusting.’

But another disagreed and said: ‘Nope. A reclining seat is a feature I PAID FOR. If you don’t want the person in front of you to recline, pay extra to sit in the front.’
